Frequently Asked Questions about SSAAA Sanctioning
Does SSAAA offer Professional and Amateur competition?
Yes. Although SSAAA was founded in 1995 to support Scottish Highland
Games athletics at the amateur level and the majority of our membership
are amateur competitors, we have moved many of our athletes into the
ranks of the Pros. The field rules are the same for Pros and Amateurs
alike. The only difference is that Professional are paid prize money
for the individual events and for overall standing at the end of the
day. SSAAA can offer separate competition for Pros and Ams or combine
them in a single Pro-Am competition.
How much does it
cost?
It varies, but probably not as much as you think. SSAAA's goal is to
help every Highland Game offer the best athletic competition possible.
SSAAA has helped some new Games get started for nothing more than a few
hotel rooms and a couple of judges fees. Typically, the cost depends on
the size and type of competition that the host Game wants to offer.
Distance for the Athletic Director to travel with equipment will also
affect the cost. It is important to note that SSAAA is not a for-profit
organization - the small surpluses that occasionally appear go toward
the maintenance of our equipment. All SSAAA fees must be paid on or
before the day of the Game.
What happens to our
current Athletics Chairman?
He
will likely experience a significant drop in his blood pressure and
enjoy the Festival for a change. The Athletic Chairman is typically the
person attends the Festival Committee meetings and handles athletic
details in advance of the festival. The Athletic Chairman is SSAAA's,
our channel of communication with the host festival. He will keep SSAAA
abreast of all the festival's wishes and ensure that any athletic site
requirements (tent, field size, water etc.) are being met. Our job is
to do all the work on the day of the Game. Once SSAAA arrives to set up
the field, the SSAAA Athletic Director will take responsibility for the
athletic events for the day. The Athletic Director supervises field lay
out, checks athlete waivers, assigns officials and directs all athletic
activity on the field from the start of competition to the end. The
Athletic Director also directs the take down of everything in the
athletic area after competition has ended. SSAAA provides the manpower
and materials to handle everything on the athletic field on the day of
the Game. The Athletic Chairman handles all the advance planning until
the night before the Game. The SSAA Athletic Director takes the field
on the day of the Festival and makes it all happen. This is especially
important for Games that rotate their responsibilities among their
volunteer Chairman. SSAAA ensures continuity.
